Divergent and Convergent Thinking across the Schoolyears: A Dynamic Perspective on Creativity Development
نویسندگان
چکیده
Creative thinking is critical to overcome many daily life situations. As such, there has been a growing interest on how creative develops during childhood. However, little known about the underlying mechanisms driving its development. Indeed, almost all research focused divergent thinking, leaving aside convergent and did not thoroughly investigate internal and/or external factors influence their Here, 222 children aged from 4 12 years old attending either Montessori or traditional school performed drawing-based standardized tasks. In addition, subset of 41 were tested using similar tasks for second session 3 apart. The results revealed dynamic developmental stages thinking. More specifically, loss was counterbalanced by gain especially fourth-grade slump (8–10 old). Although Montessori-schooled showed overall higher abilities than traditionally schooled children, no differences observed in trajectories between two pedagogies. This suggests that progress decrease may be mostly due such as brain maturation peer pressure.

Bilingualism and Creativity: Benefits in Convergent Thinking Come with Losses in Divergent Thinking
Bilingualism is commonly assumed to improve creativity but the mechanisms underlying creative acts, and the way these mechanisms are affected by bilingualism, are not very well understood. We hypothesize that learning to master multiple languages drives individuals toward a relatively focused cognitive-control state that exerts strong top-down impact on information processing and creates strong...
متن کاملConvergent and divergent perspective.
Use of divergent (or inverse) perspective in pictures is often regarded as arbitrary or even as erroneous in spite of the fact that entire schools of art exist in which this kind of perspective is regularly used. An experiment is reported which shows that a significant trend towards divergent perspective is experienced by subjects viewing laterally displaced three-dimensional arrays. Centrally ...
متن کاملThe impact of physical exercise on convergent and divergent thinking
Anecdotal literature suggests that creative people sometimes use bodily movement to help overcome mental blocks and lack of inspiration. Several studies have shown that physical exercise may sometimes enhance creative thinking, but the evidence is still inconclusive. In this study we investigated whether creativity in convergent- and divergent-thinking tasks is affected by acute moderate and in...

متن کاملRisk-taking and creativity: Convergent, but not divergent thinking is better in low-risk takers
The relationship between risk-taking and creativity is critical to understanding social harmony and innovation. While some studies have assessed the link between risk-taking and divergent thinking, the association between risk-taking and convergent thinking remains unclear. Two studies were conducted to systemically investigate whether risk-taking is linked to convergent thinking. In Study 1, a...
